GPL question: installation scripts

Hello

I'm perfectly aware that this is not the appropriate place for such questions, but I could not find a better one...

We are considering to use Linux in one of our products (_not_ a "User Product" in the sense of GPLv3).
After studying GPLv2 and GPLv3 and the comments and FAQs of the FSF and gpl-violations.org, I still do not understand: What exactly are "installation scripts" in embedded devices?

 - What tools can be presumed to be available to the user (e.g. Flash programmer)?
 - What knowledge / skills can be expected from the user (e.g. opening a case, building a cable, contacting some test points, knowing what JTAG is)?
 - Is it sufficient to provide the sources and tools to the user to build e.g. a Motorola hex file, and then assume the user is able to program it onto a MCU via JTAG?
 - How would "installation scripts" look like for a device without standard communication interfaces?
 - Beside the clauses for "User Products": are there differences in the meaning of "installation scripts" between GPLv2 and GPLv3?

Thanks,
Daniel
