Then the person who gave you the hardware is in violation (probably not 
deliberately).  However, a test purchase would likely be necessary to 
verify infringement.  If it's an old product, it's probably necessary 
just to forget about this one.  Choose the battles.  You're right that 
many people can take action, but they do have to copyright holders.
