I'm not sure you want to release your GPL code under a Public Domain
license at all, unless you truly aren't interested in the copyright that
currently binds it. 

Using the GPL in the first place, makes me think you care about
copyright (or you wouldn't be on this list, right? ;) 

If you wanted to relicense it in a way that was amicable to both, you
could choose the BSD license, retain copyright (and still be able to
legally enforce it), and let anyone use it however they wish, free or
commercially.
